Lawrence, who was nicknamed "Yogi" by a boyhood friend after viewing a movie about India, moved with his family to the famed "Hill" section of St. Louis in 1932. There he attended the Wade Grammer School, but dropped out at age 14, and worked several jobs, including driving a soft-drink truck. At age 17, Berra along with Joe Garagiola tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals, but failed to impress Cardinals' executive Branch Rickey. However, the Yankees later signed him for $500. 1 @1992 Front Row
